History Our organization was founded in 2006 by a dedicated group of students looking for real-world experience in the setting of the university. The Foundation for IUP granted the group $200,000 in funds for trading. When the recession hit, the portfolio took a hit as well. The students prevailed, however, consistently outperforming the S&P 500 throughout the recession and beyond. The Foundation for IUP was impressed by the performance of the students, and granted them an additional $220,000 for trading. What We Do The Student Managed Investment Portfolio actively seeks to create the most marketable students on campus. We give our students real-world experience with equity valuation and trading, as well as practical insight through teacher and guest lectures. Students of all levels are encouraged to join: we cater to individual's levels and needs. Who Can Join? SMIP is open to students who are majoring in Finance, Accounting, or Economics, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater. We recognize that some students have an innate ability for investing and others have great potential.
